Angola 1-1 Botswana (Angola win 5-3 on penalties)

Luanda, 18/07/04 The Unofficial Football World Champions are Angola! How on Earth did that happen? This Southern African country is better known for its long-running civil war than for its footballing prowess, and the national side are certainly the most unlikely champions in UFWC history. Angola’s ‘star’ player is João Pereira of Boavista in Portugal. Who? Well, exactly, but Angola are here on merit having beaten Nigeria 1-0 in a World Cup Qualifier. Hail the underdogs. In this match, mighty champions Angola defeated Botswana 5-3 on penalties in this COSAFA Castle Cup Quarter Final. It was 1-1 at the end of regulation time, with Flavio having given Angola the lead in the 4th minute, only for Botswana's Tshepo Mothlabankwe to equalise from a free kick in the 26th minute. But Angola scored all of their penalties to proceed to the semi final of FIFA's 'showpiece tournament for southern Africa'. Angola won the match, so get a UFWC ranking point, and are now ranked level with Portugal!
