Jamaica 0-2 Nigeria The Valley, 31/05/04 A little-known four-team international tournament played out at Charlton’s The Valley stadium provided an opportunity for Nigeria to take the UFWC title from the Republic of Ireland and then retain it against Jamaica. The Super Eagles defeated the Reggae Boyz 2-0 to win the Unity Cup and remain Unofficial Football World Champions. John Utaka and Bartholomew Ogbeche scored first half goals to give Nigeria victory. Ogbeche had also scored twice in the 3-0 win over Ireland just two days previously. The Nigerians looked impressive, and easily won over the London crowd, who thoroughly appreciated the skills of Utaka, Ogbeche and also Christian Obodo. Nigeria are the very first African nation to be named UFWC champions in over 130 years of international football history. For followers of African football, the only surprise regarding Nigeria’s success is that it has taken so long.
