13 November 2013 World Cup Qualifier Play-Off King Abdullah Stadium, Amman Scorers: Pereira, Stuani, Lodeiro, Rodriguez, Cavani Unofficial football world champions Uruguay comfortably defeated Jordan to retain the UFWC title and effectively book a place at Brazil 2014. This was the first leg of the CONMEBOL World Cup play-off. The second leg will be played next Wednesday 20 November, and having built up such a big aggregate lead it seems impossible that Uruguay will not qualify. However, under UFWC rules the two legs of the play-off count as two entirely separate matches. So there is still a good measure of interest left in this play-off. Uruguay lined up with the formidable-looking front pairing of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. Diego Lugano of West Brom started at the back, while Southampton's Gaston Ramirez was on the bench. Jordan had top goalscorer Ahmad Hayel up front, and veteran defender Hatem Aqel controlling things at the back. Jordan started incredibly positively, running at the Uruguayan backline with pace, and forcing a couple of corners. But they didn't make the most of their possession, and it was Uruguay who took the lead on 22 minutes. After a header from Cavani was parried by Jordan keeper Mohammad Shatnaw, Benfica defender Maxi Pereira arrived in the box to put the ball in the net. The goal instantly deflated the Jordanian team and crowd. The home side failed to create anything of note, as Uruguay patiently took control of the game. It was 2-0 just before half-time, Cristian Stuani capitalising on a slip by Odai Alsaify to score. Still just a quarter of the way through, it looked like this play-off was over, but to Jordan's credit they came out for the second half with renewed vigour, and bravely pushed forward. All hope was lost, however, on 69 minutes, when Cavani rounded the keeper and pulled the ball back for Nicolas Lodeiro to make it 3-0 to Uruguay. Cristian Rodriguez drilled in a fourth on 78 minutes as Uruguay asserted total dominance. And the proverbial icing on the cake was supplied in injury time, as Cavani made it 5-0 with a brilliant free-kick, hit with power and bend into the top corner of the Jordanian goal. So the play-off is surely over, but Jordan can still regain a lot of pride in the second leg. A victory by any score would see them take the UFWC title and become unofficial football world champions.
