The Biggest Ever UFWC Title Match Wins | Feature
The UFWC is back, after a four-month winter break, with unofficial football world champions Peru looking to defend their title, and take it into the 2018 World Cup Finals in Russia. Peru's World Cup campaign kicks off on 16 June against Denmark. But before that the UFWC champions will need to avoid defeat in a series of World Cup warm-up matches, starting with a friendly against Croatia in Miami on 23 March.
For the third time in 11 months Germany and Netherlands met each other in a UFWC title match. After a 2-2 draw in November 2018 and the UFWC title win from Germany in March 2019 the dutch team was motivated to not only win the trophy back but to also polish their so far not very successful start into the UEFA2020 qualifying campaign. And UFWC match #959 was not going to disappoint!
The Unofficial Football World Championships may be the self-proclaimed least well-known football competition in the world, but things may be set to change. I’m in little doubt that the current state of the game — the groundswell of feeling coming from the grassier roots of the sport, combined with the inherent inclusiveness of the UFWC — makes for a perfect storm.
Trinidad and Tobago will become the latest national football team to make their Unofficial Football World Championships debut when they play current champions Uruguay in the next UFWC title match in May. When the game was first announced, Trinidad and Tobago were 49th in the FIFA rankings. They've since slipped to 53rd, but remain one of the highest-ranked FIFA sides to have never challenged for the UFWC title.
